Sun Shield – To Protect Skin from Sun on a Cellular Level

$4.99$23.99

Sun Shield is a natural sun protection lotion (not a sunscreen) that soothes skin and protects against free radical damage at a cellular level. Organic, cold-pressed oils and butters are rich in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, natural SPF, and are high in vitamins A, C, and E to soothe and protect your skin naturally.

We love the sun (and all the vitamin D it provides)…but we don’t love the skin damage excessive exposure can cause.  Traditional sunscreens contain potentially cancer-causing ingredients like avobenzene.  Safer options contain physical blockers, like zinc oxide.  Both help avoid burns, but also block vitamin D.

We decided to go for a new approach to skin health! Give Sun Shield a try!

Key Ingredients:

  • Olive Oil – SPF 3-5, soothes skin
  • Avocado Oil – SPF 15, anti-inflammatory
  • Raspberry Oil – SPF 25-50, phytosterols
  • Mango Butter – SPF 4, rich in vitamin A and antioxidants
  • Comfrey – repairs skin, antioxidant
  • Calendula – antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

ABSOLUTELY NO colors, flavors (natural or artificial), preservatives, added sugar, sodium benzoate, citric acid, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, top allergens (corn, soy, nuts, gluten, dairy, fish) or other junk!

Description

Sun Shield is a sun protectant lotion that provides a completely natural way of safeguarding your skin from sun damage. This lotion doesn’t absorb the sun’s rays or reflect them. Instead, it penetrates deeply into the skin to help protect against damage at the cellular level. Raspberry seed oil protects against UVA and UVB rays, while the oils and butters naturally have SPF ranging from 2 to 50 SPF each.

We use pure, plant-based oils infused with whole organic herbs that are rich in antioxidants. This formula nourishes your skin, blocks free radicals, all while protecting your skin from redness, wrinkles, and damage. Please keep in mind that Sun Shield is not an official sunscreen. Depending on your skin type, you may prefer to pair this with a mineral-based sunscreen for particularly hot or sunny days or you may find it to be enough protection on its own. Looking for an after-sun lotion? Try Sun-Soothe!

FAQs

Q: Is this a replacement for sunscreen? Is it a sunscreen?

A: Sun Shield is not a sunscreen.  Products must contain either a chemical blocker (like oxybenzene) or a physical blocker (like zinc oxide) to legally be considered a sunscreen.  Instead, Sun Shield uses plant oils and herbs that have a natural SPF and protect skin on a cellular level.  Some people use it instead of a traditional sunscreen and some people use it along with a traditional sunscreen.

Q: What is the SPF of Sun Shield?

A: Because it is not legally a sunscreen, it doesn’t have an official SPF rating.  However, based on the SPF of each plant oil in it, we estimate a level of 12 – 15.

Q: This is just a bunch of oils…isn’t that like cooking yourself in the sun?

A: No.  Our skin naturally protects itself with oils!  This will penetrate your skin to protect your skin at a cellular level.  It will not make you ‘cook’ in the sun.

Q: Some of these oils are seed oils! I thought we were never supposed to use those? Won’t they become toxic when exposed to sun?

A: It’s best to avoid seed oils that have been heated to high temperatures, like when frying food, because they do become denatured and potentially toxic then.  However, small amounts of raw, cold-pressed seed oils are fine, especially topically.  The heat level at which these oils become denatured is at least 300 degrees F (which is fairly cool for cooking, but much higher than they would ever get on your skin).  You’re safe here!

Q: Is Sun Shield strong enough for ________?

A: It varies greatly.  Some people who are very fair can use it exclusively in strong sunlight and not burn.  Others may burn even in moderate sunlight.  It depends on genetics, tendency to burn, strength of sun, time of year, and even diet.  A person who consumes an anti-inflammatory diet will be less likely to burn and experience more success with Sun Shield than those who eat more sugar, vegetable oils, and white flour.  (Yes, really!)

Q: What if Sun Shield doesn’t work for me?

A: Like anything else, Sun Shield doesn’t work for 100% of people.  We recommend trying it out during shorter sun exposure first (rather than a long day at the beach).  If it doesn’t work, we have a money-back guarantee — just let us know.

Q: Can I use this for swimming?

A: Yes, you can, but we suggest letting the product absorb into the skin as much as possible before getting in the pool and reapplying frequently.

Not for the Florida sun! I want to start by saying, I LOVE Earthley products and this is in no way a bash to the company who has fantastic quality items and customer service. However, I was compelled to write this to help someone else. I decided to try it on our vacation when we were just going to be on the beach for a short time, it was an hour, tops. I burned terribly. Like the worst I maybe ever have. And I didn’t burn anywhere except where I used the sun shield. Not sure why it didn’t work on me, or seemed to even bake me worse, but just wanted to warn in case someone else tried it on vacation. It’s no fun 🙁

  2. Sabrina Wilham (verified owner)

I tell everyone I know about this product! I love having the peace of mind that there are no chemicals and it’s protecting my families skin on a cellular level. Just a forewarning it is a little greasy – doesn’t bother me, but I’ve heard others I’ve turned on to it say that’s the only thing they don’t like.

I LOVE this stuff. I keep a stick in my diaper bag and a bottle in the fridge. the stick is great for face application and on the go touch ups. I will say you need to reapply. So far it works well on my 1 year old, but not as well on my 6 year old with really fair skin so keep that In mind. my one year old has more of my skin complexion and my older one is more like my husband.

  4. Anna (verified owner)

I love this because I know it is clean and I can trust it way more than all the chemical filled sun screen junk out there. I love that I can be happy and at peace when applying to my whole family- young to old. I feel like I am always telling my mom friends about earthly!!!!

  5. Kathryn (verified owner)

I have been using this for my family since it came out. We get looks as its not the fruity tooty spray or a typical white slather. We really get looks after everyone has been in the sun and my kids have a nice glow while others who used the typical products are beet red. Our process is BEFORE we get in the sun, like 30 minutes, we put some on so it really soaks in. Then, reapply a little bit right before they get in the water or whatever activity. Works like a charm.

Now this Sun Shield stuff really surprised me! I rarely would go out and sit by a pool without at least a SPF 30 on. I thought I would give this a try yesterday. I applied it on my shoulders chest arms and legs. After about 4 hours on and off in the sun, there was no burn! I really was surprised because it doesn’t have zinc oxide in it. But whatever this combination is, it certainly protected my skin. Good stuff and I would highly recommend it!

My kids and I love it! It doesn’t feel heavy on skin like traditional sunscreen and doesn’t have a chemical smell to it. It doesn’t really have much of a smell at all. I love that the ingredients are natural and I don’t have to stand in a store reading ingredient lists anymore (I’m allergic to parabens) or worry about what I’m putting on my skin.

  9. Andrea

I have a son who is a red-head and has fair skin. I’ve used this sun shield on him when we’ve been in the full sun at noon for an hour and he didn’t burn at all! I will keep using it as needed. I have not tested it at the pool or beach.

  10. Lynn Trollope (verified owner)

This has been great for my nose, forehead and shoulders! I’m a redhead and burn very easily.

  11. Chelse O. (verified owner)

This is my all time favorite summer product and by far the best sun protection we’ve ever used. I’ve never used regular sun screen with my kids and I would skip coverage altogether. I use this on myself, my 4, 3, and 1 year old sons. We’re all pretty fair skinned thanks to the Irish in us. Well, I hear people comment on how TAN all of us are already on a regular basis! I tell everyone about Sun Shield. I leave ours in the fridge so it’s not as runny, and then it lathers better and goes further with each use. My skin has never been so tan so quickly all while getting some nourishing protection and benefits from direct sunlight. I am so happy with this product! On the rare early occasion we get a little pink, we use Sun Soothe which is a game changer for all kinds of burns! Highly recommend this product, no matter your skin tone.

  12. Karri (verified owner)

I love this! Keeps us protected from the sun! I like that it’s oily because I can be sure I cover my whole body, and it smells great

  13. Ashley Bloomfield (verified owner)

This caused sun burn. I was outside for an hour and the areas I didn’t use it I didn’t burn vs the areas I used it, I became sunburned. Almost enhanced the Sun vs protect.

  14. Lanae (verified owner)

I love earthley products and have been using them for awhile. I was so excited to try Sun Shield. Unfortunately I got such a deep sunburn. It’s been 6 days and I still can’t hardly touch it. I guess it didn’t work for me sadly.

  15. Nicole Kessler (verified owner)

Like all sunscreen products- the feeling of oil will be there. So far I’ve used it at soccer games and haven’t burnt where it was applied. Also applied it where I missed and thought I was going to burn and that area didn’t burn! Both my kids have survived during soccer games and park days without getting burnt. The fact that this works well while outdoors and it’s beneficial to our bodies is such a big plus! I have not tried it in water yet- but most experiences have been positive! If I do get burnt- I apply the sun soothe and the red is gone by the next morning! Highly recommend bc of the plantain and comfrey!!

  16. Brittany (verified owner)

Unfortunately this product did not work for me. I followed the instructions and applied about every hour and after water exposure. Instead of any protection, I am deeply sunburned. I would not use this product on my kids and would not recommend it to others.

  17. Naomi Dimambro (verified owner)

I love using this before I go on my long runs in the summer! You do want to let it set in your skin before immediately spending a ton of time in the sun. I will be buying another bottle soon since I’m training for a late spring marathon! Lots of time outside.

  18. gmosaunders (verified owner)

Loved the ingredients but hated how oily my skin was after applying. I wanted a safe sun shield for me and my 6 month old and this definitely didn’t cause any reactions or skin irritations. I just couldn’t get past the oiliness of the product.

  19. Kathy (verified owner)

We had been wanting non toxic “sunscreen” option so we ordered this before our trip to Mexico. Not only did we not burn, but our skin felt and looked amazing. I do suggest to apply fairly frequent due to a lower “spf” but it worked great!
My only negative would be the bottle leaked some.

  20. Jennifer Guile (verified owner)

Happy to have found this as an alternative to conventional sunscreen, clean ingredients and I feel better about using on my toddler
