What you need to know about mold toxicity.

Mold is a common fungus that is all around us. It’s naturally occurring in our environment and can grow in wet places like pipes, roofs, under tiles, and wood floors. Some molds are more toxic than others and it is their byproducts, mycotoxins, that are, specifically, of concern.

Some people are more sensitive and reactive to mycotoxins than others. And there’s a whole host of factors that may determine whether one is reactive or not: the health of their gut microbiome, their immune response, the presence of yeast overgrowth or dysbiosis, thyroid health, genetic mutations, and more.

Mold toxicity is often overlooked because the symptoms can be just general enough that it’s easy to pass them off as something else…

The symptoms experienced typically fall into two categories: allergy-like symptoms and inflammatory symptoms.

Runny nose, itchiness, shortness of breath, sneezing, and skin rashes may be common in those with mold toxicity. Brain fog, extreme fatigue, depression, anxiety, weight gain, hair loss, excessive thirst, and ringing in the ears may also be experienced.

So, you know, or suspect, you have mold toxicity; what do you do?

  1. 1. If possible, the first thing you have to do is remove the exposure. This sounds overwhelming, especially if the mold is deep within your home. There are remediation options, however sometimes, it is just easier, and more affordable, to move. And we don’t say that lightly…however, if you don’t remove the exposure, no supplement or regimen will be able to help you fully.
  2. 2. Ensure bile is flowing. Bile is the laundry detergent of your body and with mold, it can become thick and stagnant, making it difficult for the body to move out the mycotoxins. Use digestive bitters to help with this.
  3. 3. Address heavy metal exposure. We are all exposed to heavy metals through our food, water, and environment. If we fail to properly move them out of our body, they can contribute to mold thriving. Heavy metals are mold’s best friends, so supporting their removal is essential.
  4. 4. Repair liver damage. Because mycotoxins are being filtered through your liver, they can cause a lot of oxidative stress and damage to your liver cells. Adding in herbs like milk thistle, with a proven ability to reverse liver damage, is so important.
  5. 5. Prevent mycotoxin reabsorption. As you get that bile flowing and mycotoxins are being moved into the intestines, using a binder is going to help mop them up and ensure they will be moved out with a bowel movement. Once they reach your intestines, it’s possible for them to re-enter circulation. Binders prevent that from happening.
  6. 6. Calm histamine. Not only does mold toxicity cause uncomfortable allergy symptoms, but cleansing and killing the mold can cause these symptoms to ramp up. Herbs rich in natural antihistamines will help calm this response.
  7. 7. Protect your cells with polyphenols and antioxidants.
  8. 8. Introduce anti-fungals. This is a big piece to the puzzle. Mycotoxins like to take up residence in wet, dark places within your body, like your gut microbiome. You have to kick them out by using antifungal agents like: clove, cinnamon, coconut, and pumpkin seed.

Given the right support, your body can and will thrive after exposure.
