Are You Detoxing Too Fast? How to Tell and What to Do

Missing Alt Text

Ever feel like when you first make a healthy lifestyle change, you feel worse before you feel better? Detoxing can be one of those times. The whole point of a detox is to help our bodies get rid of the junk they’ve been holding onto—but those toxins don’t just vanish. They get stirred up on their way out, and if they move too fast, our bodies can feel completely overwhelmed.

Fear not, though! In this blog, we’ll talk about how to know if you’re going too fast and how to slow down to a pace that allows your body to detox with more ease, so you can get the gross stuff out and move on to living your best life.

There is a lot to consider before starting a detox, and if you want to dive deeper, our What You Need to Know About Detoxing blog will take you there. Here, we’ll focus on how to best support ourselves through the process.

What Normal Detox Looks Like

First of all, know that it’s normal to feel a little off when you start detoxing. We’re introducing big changes, and our bodies need time to adjust. Usually, these symptoms show up in the first few days and then start to fade. Here’s what you might notice:

  • Mild fatigue
  • Feeling “meh” (or blech, or wahhh)
  • Being extra thirsty, no matter how much water you drink
  • Minor digestion changes—maybe mild constipation or slightly looser stools
  • Minor rashes or increased intensity of existing ones
  • Random aches and pains (often because your lymphatic system is working overtime). Massaging your body with Lymphatic Cream can help ease aches by keeping everything flowing.
  • Minor headaches
  • Irritability

These should be short-lived—think a few days, then gradual improvement.

Signs You’re Detoxing Too Fast

Now, if things keep getting worse or hit hard and fast, that’s a red flag.

Here are signs your body is saying, “Slow down!”:

  • Ever-increasing fatigue
  • That “wired but tired” feeling
  • Diarrhea that is extreme, frequent, or lasts longer than a day or two
  • Lack of appetite
  • Nausea. Minor, short-lived queasiness is normal at the beginning of a detox, but if it persists and intensifies into nausea, this is another sign to slow down the detox.
  • Rashes continually worsening. One of the ways our bodies attempt to let go of toxins is through our skin. When other detox pathways like the liver and kidneys are blocked, this can show up as intense rashes that keep getting worse. Skin irritations can also be signaling an allergic reaction to detox supplements or products you’re taking. Minor rashes are normal at first, but should start to improve after the first few days of detoxing.
  • Difficulty Sleeping. If we’re not giving our liver the support it needs to deal with the junk we’re releasing, it can get inflamed and mess with our sleep hormones, giving us that wide awake for no good reason feeling. (2)
  • Waking up around 2 AM. Our liver works hardest between 1 and 3 AM, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. If it’s overloaded with toxins, our bodies can’t fully rest. (1)
  • Restlessness. If our liver is working overtime to process toxins, our nervous system gets activated and can make us feel anxious and on edge. We might feel hypersensitive to sounds and smells.
  • Major mood swings. TCM tells us our liver is linked to anger, so if too much is moving too fast, our emotions can feel extra intense.
  • Muscle cramps. If minor aches turn into intense cramps, it’s another sign that too much is moving too fast.
  • Irregular period. Our liver manages our reproductive hormones, and if we’re detoxing too fast, our cycles can get out of whack. Intense menstrual cramps and cycle-related mood swings while detoxing may be telling us our liver needs more support. (3)
  • Severe headaches or migraines. Minor, short-lived headaches are normal during detox, but if they become too painful to function, it’s time to slow down.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s time to pause and reassess.

Why Detoxing too Fast Happens

Think of detoxing like cleaning out a cluttered stream. If you start tossing too much junk into the current all at once, it piles up and blocks the flow. That’s what happens when we detox too fast—our bodies stir up more toxins than they can comfortably handle, and if the exit routes aren’t clear, those toxins get stuck. Instead of feeling better, we end up feeling worse because everything is congested. This is the #1 detox mistake people make, and you can learn more about it in this blog, The #1 Detox Mistake.

Why does this happen? A few common reasons:

  • Detox pathways (liver, kidneys, lymphatic system) aren’t fully supported
  • Too many detoxifying supplements at once
  • Not enough hydration, minerals, or digestive support
  • Stress slows everything down
  • Detox method is too extreme for your body’s current resilience

What to do if you’re Detoxing too Fast

Slow down. Our bodies need time to process everything we’re asking them to do. If you’re taking a bunch of supplements, cut back. You can reduce the amount you’re taking or even take a short break until you feel less stressed and better supported. But you may want to keep taking the ones that actually support your detox pathways. We know it can be hard to understand what our bodies are telling us, and that’s why we wrote this How to Listen to Your Body blog for some extra support.

Here’s the thing: pushing too hard doesn’t help. If our bodies are overwhelmed, they can’t get rid of the toxins anyway, so all that effort becomes self- defeating. Detoxing isn’t a race—it’s about balance. Our bodies need downtime during this process. Trying to keep up our usual pace while detoxing can backfire, sending our system into survival mode. When that happens, instead of releasing toxins, our bodies might start storing them (and even storing fat) because they feel under threat. This is especially true if we’re eating fewer calories or making too many changes all at once.

How to Support Your Body During Detox

If you’re slowing down, the next step is giving your body the TLC it needs:

  • Hydrate and replenish electrolytes
  • Boost minerals—magnesium lotion and mineral supplements can make a huge difference
  • Move gently—walk, stretch, or do light exercise to keep things flowing
  • Take Epsom salt and herbal baths for relaxation and mineral support
  • Practice breathing exercises to calm your nervous system
  • Eat light, nourishing meals—don’t skip food. (Detoxes that don’t include fibrous food making our nervous systems go into survival mode and are counterproductive)
  • Get plenty of sleep—your body does its best repair work (and naturally detoxes) while we rest. Our Secret to A Good Night’s Sleep guide and Sleepy Time tincture are here to support us getting our Zs.
  • Support your lymphatic system—gentle massage with a lymphatic cream can help
  • Support your hard-working liver and kidneys with supplements like Liver Love and UT Relief
  • Support a healthy stress response. Our Stress Less guide offers some tools, and our Natural Balance formula brings botanical fortification.

If possible, start your detox on a weekend or take a little time off. It might not sound like the dream vacation, but a slow, restful reset could be exactly what your body needs to feel amazing later.

Bottom Line

Detoxing should make you feel better—not like your body is being punished. If you need to take a break, that’s okay. Listening to your body is the smartest thing you can do. One step forward is better than none, and a gentle, supported detox will always beat a fast, overwhelming one.
