What is “Real Food?” (And Why Does it Matter?)

Real food has become a buzzword in recent years. But what does that actually mean?

“Real food” means unprocessed foods. Food that is as close to nature as you can get. Food that can be prepared in a standard home kitchen, without specialized equipment to process the food.

“Unreal” food would be processed foods. We can’t make cheese puffs at home… they require specialized industrial equipment. And no matter how many nice labels there are on the package, promising no MSG or other unhealthy ingredients, they are still highly processed.  (Even the “organic” and “natural” versions.)

By the way, this isn’t to say that you can never eat processed foods again. Many people have certain favorite items they’re not willing to give up, and that’s okay. Processed foods can be an occasional treat, but they shouldn’t make up the majority of your diet.

These ingredients are added to improve the taste or texture of foods that have to sit in a package or on a shelf for a long time (as well as to increase the shelf life).
