Sun Shield – To Protect Skin from Sun on a Cellular Level

Sun Shield is a natural sun protection lotion (not a sunscreen) that soothes skin and protects against free radical damage at a cellular level. Organic, cold-pressed oils and butters are rich in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, natural SPF, and are high in vitamins A, C, and E to soothe and protect your skin naturally.

We love the sun (and all the vitamin D it provides)…but we don’t love the skin damage excessive exposure can cause.  Traditional sunscreens contain potentially cancer-causing ingredients like avobenzene.  Safer options contain physical blockers, like zinc oxide.  Both help avoid burns, but also block vitamin D.

We decided to go for a new approach to skin health! Give Sun Shield a try!

Key Ingredients:

  • Olive Oil – SPF 3-5, soothes skin
  • Avocado Oil – SPF 15, anti-inflammatory
  • Raspberry Oil – SPF 25-50, phytosterols
  • Mango Butter – SPF 4, rich in vitamin A and antioxidants
  • Comfrey – repairs skin, antioxidant
  • Calendula – antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

ABSOLUTELY NO colors, flavors (natural or artificial), preservatives, added sugar, sodium benzoate, citric acid, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, top allergens (corn, soy, nuts, gluten, dairy, fish) or other junk!

Description

Sun Shield is a sun protectant lotion that provides a completely natural way of safeguarding your skin from sun damage. This lotion doesn’t absorb the sun’s rays or reflect them. Instead, it penetrates deeply into the skin to help protect against damage at the cellular level. Raspberry seed oil protects against UVA and UVB rays, while the oils and butters naturally have SPF ranging from 2 to 50 SPF each.

We use pure, plant-based oils infused with whole organic herbs that are rich in antioxidants. This formula nourishes your skin, blocks free radicals, all while protecting your skin from redness, wrinkles, and damage. Please keep in mind that Sun Shield is not an official sunscreen. Depending on your skin type, you may prefer to pair this with a mineral-based sunscreen for particularly hot or sunny days or you may find it to be enough protection on its own. Looking for an after-sun lotion? Try Sun-Soothe!

FAQs

Q: Is this a replacement for sunscreen? Is it a sunscreen?

A: Sun Shield is not a sunscreen.  Products must contain either a chemical blocker (like oxybenzene) or a physical blocker (like zinc oxide) to legally be considered a sunscreen.  Instead, Sun Shield uses plant oils and herbs that have a natural SPF and protect skin on a cellular level.  Some people use it instead of a traditional sunscreen and some people use it along with a traditional sunscreen.

Q: What is the SPF of Sun Shield?

A: Because it is not legally a sunscreen, it doesn’t have an official SPF rating.  However, based on the SPF of each plant oil in it, we estimate a level of 12 – 15.

Q: This is just a bunch of oils…isn’t that like cooking yourself in the sun?

A: No.  Our skin naturally protects itself with oils!  This will penetrate your skin to protect your skin at a cellular level.  It will not make you ‘cook’ in the sun.

Q: Some of these oils are seed oils! I thought we were never supposed to use those? Won’t they become toxic when exposed to sun?

A: It’s best to avoid seed oils that have been heated to high temperatures, like when frying food, because they do become denatured and potentially toxic then.  However, small amounts of raw, cold-pressed seed oils are fine, especially topically.  The heat level at which these oils become denatured is at least 300 degrees F (which is fairly cool for cooking, but much higher than they would ever get on your skin).  You’re safe here!

Q: Is Sun Shield strong enough for ________?

A: It varies greatly.  Some people who are very fair can use it exclusively in strong sunlight and not burn.  Others may burn even in moderate sunlight.  It depends on genetics, tendency to burn, strength of sun, time of year, and even diet.  A person who consumes an anti-inflammatory diet will be less likely to burn and experience more success with Sun Shield than those who eat more sugar, vegetable oils, and white flour.  (Yes, really!)

Q: What if Sun Shield doesn’t work for me?

A: Like anything else, Sun Shield doesn’t work for 100% of people.  We recommend trying it out during shorter sun exposure first (rather than a long day at the beach).  If it doesn’t work, we have a money-back guarantee — just let us know.

This worked for me while gardening. I use care also use care to take breaks and wear a hat. It works better than any regular sunscreen I’ve tried. I can deal with it being oily because I love the moisturizer it provides. My skin looks better after using it.

  2. Whitney (verified owner)

This stuff is awesome! Even worked on my fair skinned red-head! We went hiking and ended up being on the trail longer than expected. So glad we put sun shield on before because none of us got burned! (We did wear hats and were in and out of the trees but normally that would have been enough to burn my fair skinned baby).

Okay… So this might be a little lengthy but hopefully helpful to others. So you know, I am talking about Florida Sun.
Soooo I am fair skinned and my husband is not. I do not lay out in the sun at the pool but sit under an umbrella wearing a visor, then a wide brimmed hat while in the water.
Because I have very sensitive skin, I have found it hard to find natural sunscreens that I can use, so I have not been using anything and just limit my exposure. (I use fractionated coconut oil daily after a shower for moisturizer)
Now… if I am going to the pool, I use Sun Shield. I got pink the first time, as did my husband and he had a tan and was in the sun longer. We did not reapply. Usual length of time at pool, 2-5 hours, time slot varies from noon-7pm.
I do not use this on my face. I use daily, a little of the Earthley eye serum, skin serum and Sun Soothe on a couple of spots on my face that haven’t been completely identified as seb derm, eczema or evolving lupus (which the sun exacerbates). The Sun Soothe seems to relieve the redness and the rash on my face. I can actually enjoy being outside again ….. YEAH!!!
So the long of the short of it, IS….I have really sensitive skin and I can use Sun Shield (knowing its not a SPF), I do not blister and I have a tan.
Full disclosure, it is really oily and quick to dispense, so that can be really messy the first time you go to use it NOT knowing this! I am used to using coconut oil so this is not an issue for me.
    I love this product!

This has worked well for myself and kids at the pool. Does not irritate skin at all. Pleasant smell and not greasy feeling.

  5. Taylor Wilson (verified owner)

I usually don’t apply sun protection to myself or my kids, but when I do this is my choice. It goes on incredibly easy and fast and helps is all stay out just a little longer.

  6. Hali Wilkins

Absolutely love this stuff for myself and my 1.5 year old!

  7. Brooke

I wanted to love this Sun Shield, sadly I just couldn’t . It was super oily and doesn’t absorb in, so you’re left feeling greasy the whole time. I don’t like the way regular sunscreen feels so I couldn’t handle this. Then even though the lid was on and closed, it leaked out everywhere in my drawer. Not sure if it separated or something? I LOVE all my other Earthley products but this one went in the trash. Will still absolutely buy from them and share their site because I love their products and what they stand for!

  8. Dawn Zahler (verified owner)

Didn’t really work for me. But I like the consistency of it.

  9. Lori (verified owner)

This sun shield doesn’t stop the burn for me (I’m very fair skinned) but it does work wonders to turn the burn into tan. I use it as both a shield and after sun care.

  10. Kerry (verified owner)

This spreads so easily. I always struggled with mineral sunscreen on my kid’s face, but this was quick and soaked right in. It is not exactly sunscreen but helps protect your skin.

  11. Yana

This is the real stuff, unlike all the toxic filled sunscreens, this product is made with great ingredients. I love that I can use this on my baby and not have to worry about harmful chemicals getting on her skin. I was out in the sun for a long time and didn’t reapply as needed and got a little burn so be sure to reapply as needed.

  12. Cecily Marks (verified owner)

It might be a little on the gritty side with all the oils but it does work and you could always use a tad less and rub into the skin better. I love that I can actually apply this before leaving the house and not have to worry about losing any benefits from the sun! It shields the bad and allows the good. It works well for my family. I am Hispanic so my kids are half that and Caucasian the other- one application with about 2 hrs of sun is more than enough for us. I have heard that fair skinned individuals need more applications. Overall I’d totally buy again.

  13. Allison Garman (verified owner)

I love using this on my toddlers. Never had a sunburn.

  14. Louisa

Love how my skin feels after using this; it feels healthy & nourished, not dry like after being in the sun for hours with other sun screens. I like that this is a light protection and not blocking out all of the many benefits of the sun.

  15. Lisa Gruich (verified owner)

I was super impressed the first time I used this and ended up nicely tanned instead of burned. Most sunscreens don’t let me tan as much as I’d like. The only downside is the oiliness. Perhaps a pump container might also work better. As for the product itself, I absolutely love it. Next year I’ll have two tubes. One for home and one for my cottage, so I don’t have to remember to take it back and forth.

  16. Debbie Runfolo (verified owner)

I am at the Jersey shore every weekend and have fair skin. Love this product and how it makes my skin feel. No more burns but a nice slow healthy tan. Great for kids too!

  17. Rhiannon (verified owner)

This is not for a very fair-skinned human to be out in full sun and not get a sunburn, with that being said, I love it. It makes my skin soft and beautiful too. I use it for my regular moisturizer, body & face in the summertime.

  18. Aubriana sturdivant (verified owner)

We’ve been using this on our entire family and have had a great experience. I don’t burn easily but my son does and we were outside in mid day sun while he used this for HOURS and only got a bit red on his shoulders. Which isn’t a bad thing so I will continue to use only this(minus our mineral based sunscreen) for the mean time. Oh and I love how moisturized our skin is after applying!

  19. Jessica Henderson

I love all the other products I have been buying for a year now but, the sunblock just doesn’t work. I slathered it on all day and I’m am red as a lobster and in extreme pain. I really wanted to switch to a sunblock that is natural but, this just doesn’t work at all. I think it actually worked more like cooking oil. I have never gotten a burn like this when I just went out with bare skin. Im sorry for the bad review but, this sun shield doesn’t work at all and I’m an olive complexion.

  20. Becky (verified owner)

My daughter used this for the first time this past weekend. I thought this was going to protect against sunburn. Please read the fine print. She has a very bad sunburn over most of her body. Do not use this as sunscreen.
