126 customer reviews

Pest Aside is an all-natural bug repellent stick that repels ticks, mosquitoes, flies, and other pests that might bother you when you’re trying to enjoy the great outdoors! Pest Aside is a five-ingredient blend that’s very effective against all these insects, and more!

We use coconut oil, neem oil, citronella essential oil, patchouli essential oil, and candelilla wax to create a salve that’s applied from a convenient, non-messy tube.  All four oils are known for their bug repellent properties — and neem, in particular, makes it work better than most essential oil-based options! Make sure you have it whenever you plan on being outside!

Q: Is this safe for my baby, or mom while pregnant/breastfeeding?

A: Safe for babies from 6 months, and can be used safely during pregnancy and breastfeeding!

Q: Why is this in a stick instead of a spray?

A: The most effective ingredients were all oil-based, so it made the most sense to be in a stick.

Q: This melts! What can I do about it?

A: These oils will melt if in the direct sun or hot car.  We recommend placing it inside a bag or container where it won’t make a mess if it does melt.  Melting will not affect use; it will still work!

Q: How much do I need to use?

A: For backyards or low-bug areas, a little on your neck, wrists, and ankles should be enough.  If you will be in the deep woods or high-bug areas, apply to all exposed skin.

Q: Why is my product so dark? It's never been this dark before.

A: Natural products do vary by growing season or slight changes in plant variety. This does not change effectiveness.

Bugs love my child and this actually helps keep them away. It’s easy to grab to bring on outings and safe!

  2. Kathryn (verified owner)

The smell is very strong but I prefer it to the other bug spray. It also seems to work so I’ll keep using it!

  3. Sarah

Seems like it works. I prefer spray products though. None of us have been bitten by ticks which is my main concern. I don’t believe we get bit by mosquitos when using, either. I focus, at minimum, around ankles and behind the ears/neck and don’t always roll all over because my kid “hates” being rubbed & I’m not the biggest fan myself. Love that I’m not putting toxic ingredients on my family and able to give us a piece of mind. Would recommend this.

  4. Sam (verified owner)

We live in the woods with all the bugs and I constantly apply this product to my kids. When we first moved here, they would get ticks almost daily when they played outside. Now, it’s only when I forget to apply this. Love this product!

Seriously one of our favorite products! I have tried quite a few natural bug repellents and it’s hard to find one that actually works AND has great clean ingredients. It’s great for the whole family too. Definitely keep in a cool place or it can melt, but a little goes a long way for our family of 5.

  6. Amy Knowles (verified owner)

I like this product but the smell is a bit strong. Whatever you touch with this product on, will smell like it too. It does seem to work though. This is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 stars. I kept this in my bathroom and I noticed that it does seem to have melted a bit but it did not affect the effectiveness of the product.

The best for my little one! My 17 month old gets eaten alive! This smells great, is easy to apply, and I feel good knowing I’m not putting nasty chemicals on his skin.

  8. Veronica (verified owner)

I have purchased the Pest Aside twice and I absolutely swear by it. My son is extremely allergic to mosquito bites and our hot summer monsoons are miserable without Pest Aside! I will be buying another stick next spring to be ready for the summertime.

My toddler suffers from skeeter syndrome so he swells bad with mosquito bites. We love being outside but living next to a stagnant pond and a patch of woods we get swarms of mosquitos. Even with 5 bug zappers and a fan blowing they are relentless. I also found 2 ticks on him. I didn’t like the idea of constantly having to spray chemicals on my two toddlers or myself and stumbled upon this repellent salve. Not only does is smell nice, it works and is toxic free!! Win, win, win! I will be a lifetime customer and glad I ordered 3. I gave one to our neighbor because her children where getting eaten alive also. 10/10 and extremely happy, thank you!!

First use on my 2 year old after getting in the mail today and he came home with a tick on his neck. This is a spot I applied it on well in addition to his ankles and arms that were uncovered. I will still use up the product. Hopefully it works better for mosquitos.

This stuff is the real deal. I’ve used it exclusively on my kids for about 2 years now and I’ve not once found a tick on them. And that’s with hiking, rolling in the grass, and tromping through the forest on the daily. I will say it doesn’t seem as effective against mosquitos, but ticks definitely don’t like it, so I’m happy with it.

Worked for us! And I’m so happy to have a non toxic option.

  13. Callie (verified owner)

This made me break out in horrible hives. Wish I could post pictures of it. It’s red and very itchy. Won’t be using this again.

I love this! The packaging is less than great though. Above room temp and it’ll melt all over, and leaks within the tube. Not cool especially if you’re out camping with no fridge. It is super effective though!!

  16. Laura (verified owner)

Used this product at a graduation party and it worked amazingly! Only put it on my ankles and wrist and it worked for all over.

  17. Rachel (verified owner)

After trying several natural bug repellents, this one from Earthley is my favorite and I’ve decided to make sure I keep it on hand in the summer. It’s fairly effective and not really messy. The smell is not unpleasant either. I like it a lot better than sprays and such as it’s hard to keep the oils mixed in well. This doesn’t have that problem.

  18. Alexsandra

I’m always looking for a natural and effective mosquito repellent. I really wanted this one to be it. I applied liberally and still got bit; of course I can’t be sure what the alternative is. Thankfully I have the drawing out salve which really helps with the itchiness. Also living in a tropical climate the stick melts a bit and I have less control over how much gets applied, or overapplied so it won’t be something I can take with me out. The citronella smell also isn’t too much.

  19. Toni P

This product works well for sure. But we had to keep ours in the fridge because it melts which was definitely disappointing as we like to hike and camp and it left quite the oily mess to clean up. The scent is strong but that was okay we didn’t rub it everywhere just neck, wrists, ankles, and a strip down belly and back and had minimal issues with bugs! Which is saying a lot for living in the humid midwest. Would i buy it again? Not sure we do still have plenty left and will continue to use what we have.

Love this product! I was a little thrown off my the smell at first, I noticed a citranella type smell but it seems to be effective. Only thing is, don’t let it get to hot, we had it in our camper at the lake and it turns to a liquid so a bit of a mess.
