Leaves residue on all— have tried all possible solutions from rinse aid to using more or less detergent. We do have hard water in Santa Monica so maybe that’s the issue but haven’t had film with other eco detergents. Bummer because we purchased a few bags of it :/ New dishwasher, and we make sure to load with wiped dishes…film always an issue

I have been using Earthley products since 2020 and have put off using the dishwasher powder, because of the reviews stating that their dishes were spotty and didn’t look or feel clean, especially for those with hard water. After using the powder for a few cycles, I am very disappointed that I did not try it sooner! We have EXTREMELY hard water. Even with a softener and whole house filter, our well water has a lot of rust. Our dishes are sparkly clean. I have always used vinegar as a rinse aid, so, I continued to do that and now am confident that our dishes are being properly cleaned, without harsh chemicals. If you are hesitant to try this, like I was, I encourage you to give it a chance!

I really wanted to like this & thought it was good for the 1st few washes but since it’s been awful. Our dishes aren’t coming clean & leaving behind residue so I’m having to hand wash a lot afterwards which defeats the purpose of the dishwasher. The Lemon-Thyme scent was awful, it made me nauseous.

  4. Angela Young (verified owner)

This is the best detergent ever. Cleanest dishes I’ve ever had. I’m convinced that everyone complaining that it leaves residue etc is actually because you are cleaning the gunk out of your dirty dishwasher, which could probably take a month or two if it’s pretty dirty. I bet if you used in a clean and or new dishwasher you wouldn’t have this problem. Also the quality of your water matters. Soft water totally helps as does adding vinegar to the rinse aid compartment.

I really like this dish detergent. It works well & doesn’t leave a residue or spots which is wonderful. The Lemon Thyme scent is not great though. I wish it was just Lemon. I would normally only buy unscented but it was out of stock last time so I gave the Lemon Thyme a shot & the scent is a no go.

I like this product, I do rinse the food off my dishes prior to putting they in my dishwasher. My dishes come out clean with no residue. I’m wondering if some are using too much product. Perhaps decreasing the amount of both the sodas in this product would help?

  7. Theresa Cobb (verified owner)

I absolutely love every other earthley product I use, however when I tried to switch to this I was not pleased. Our dishes would have residue build up no matter how much/little of the product we used and no matter what cycle we used.

  8. Emily Adams (verified owner)

I like the minimal ingredients but unfortunately cannot recommend it. It doesn’t get our dishes clean and I end up having to hand wash them after being in the dishwasher.

  9. Courtney Lee (verified owner)

I have been using this for awhile after a big box brand stopped carrying its powder dish detergent in cardboard packaging like they used to. I prefer the unscented version and use less than a scoop full since I noticed that a full scoop left white residue on dishes. I so appreciate that the packaging is recyclable and comes with a plastic scoop to dispense the detergent.

I love Earthly products, but this one I do not like. I’ve bought twice – two different scents – and I don’t mind the scents (I don’t like strong overpowering) but it just doesn’t seem to do the job. As others have said, it left white little flakes/residue on many of the dishes and spotty. I’ve now tried it with two different dishwashers and same result. It gets two stars because it is a clean ingredient one but doesn’t work well for us. Maybe if it was a pod and then could leave it in the utensil holder it would work better.

It’s awesome. Does better than mainstream dishwasher detergents you buy at the store. I’ve been using it for a year. Love it!

  12. Diana Owens (verified owner)

White film left on all my dishes

  13. Macey (verified owner)

LOVE it! Very surprised by some of the reviews. It’s natural and it cleans! I’ve tried a normal cycle and a delicate cycle and did a wonderful job every time. I did notice a little residue on plastics but seems to only happen when our vinegar rinse aid is low. Either way not a problem 🙂 wet happy customer!

Some of these reviews… “… white film I dont know if we’re poisoning ourselves”
    What?
Tell me you’ve never used a natural cleaning product without telling me you’ve never used natural dish detergent.
Use vinegar in the rinse aid (or use a rinse aid).
Your water is probably hard and you’ve been using detergent with a lot of solvents.
You can also put a mug facing up and add a little vinegar to it and as the dishes wash and rinse that vinegar will spill into the wash cycles.

Don’t buy unless they change the formula. I’ve spent a lot of money on earthly products and I’ve never had so many issues until I bought the cleaning powder. The dish washer powder smells good at first but when the dishwasher starts going it smells horrible. As for the cleaning we have to rewash every load we run through and even when the dishes look clean we end up with this white film on the dishes. I don’t even know if we noticed the first month we bought it so who knows if we have been poisoning ourselves with eating/drinking the powder. I’m disappointed with this company for continuing to sell this even with so many bad reviews lately. I’m not buying this again and I’m not finishing the half of bag we have left. I wish I wouldn’t have given it such a long chance so I could get a refund.

Hoped for better. I am super happy with many of the products but this one was a huge disappointment. First stuff, my dishes are still dirty. Secondly, the ones that are clean, are so murky and cloudy, but my husband won’t even drink out of them. Third, the powder has clumped together. I only recently opened it, and I could easily do with the fact that I live in humid, Mississippi, so may be more of a Mississippi issue, but I put it in a older plastic sealed container, and it still doesn’t. Will not be buying this product again.

I love Earthley, what they stand for, and most of their products, but this detergent just doesn’t work. I’ve used it for over a month hoping the results would change, but I have to re-wash all of the dishes after I run them in the dishwasher. Having a toddler and a full schedule….this is just not working. The dishes come out dingy and dirty, and have a film over them. I’ve used the vinegar, I’ve cleaned my filter, I’ve played with the heat settings….so bummed!

This is an update to an earlier review. I initially was not satisfied with this dish detergent but had found a “solution.” By adding vinegar to rinse dispenser, my dishes would come out “mostly” clean. However, I have come to the conclusion (after a couple of months) that the vinegar is no longer needed. I believe now that the crud that was sprayed all over my dishes was actually coming out of the drain lines, and it took a few months to clear those out with vinegar and a “clean” detergent. I now only put in 1 TB of detergent, and my glasses are even mostly clean!

  19. Kayla (verified owner)

This dishwasher detergent is subpar. The dishes are coming out very spotty. There is leftover residue and I have to re-rinse them. Would not buy again. The scent is disappointing as well (eucalyptus-spearmint).

  20. Denise Stutzman (verified owner)

I wanted to like this so bad since it was a clean option for dishwasher detergent. but unfortunately it didn’t work well. i got a brand new dishwasher and used it right from the beginning and it always left a white film on all my glass ware. i was so sad because when i tried finish it didn’t leave a film at all. it smelled really fresh and good just couldn’t quite get the dirt and grime off.
