We formulated our Black Drawing Salve as a solution for bug bites, stings, rashes, poison ivy, acne, splinters, and more! It’s made with activated charcoal, bentonite clay, and lavender essential oil to soothe irritated skin and “draw out” toxins.

The charcoal and clay serve to ‘trap’ the toxins that are being drawn out of skin, including oil from poison ivy or toxins from stings.  This reduces pain and irritation naturally and helps it repair faster!

FAQs

Q: How do I use this?

A: Apply to the affected area and let it sit for 10 – 15 minutes.  Wipe off.  Reapply as needed if the spot is still irritated.  If you would like to keep it on longer (may be necessary with splinters), cover with a bandage to prevent mess.

Q: What can I use this for?

A: Bug bites, stings, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, acne, splinters.  Some people even use it after being forced to receive a vaccine — right on the injection site.

Q: Why is this so messy? Can’t it be some other color?

A: Unfortunately, the ‘mess’ is what makes it work!  Charcoal makes it black and is a key ingredient to ‘draw out’ the toxins.  We recommend covering with a bandage and washing with soap and water after use. If soap and water do not work, an oil of your choice should do the trick!

Q: Is this the ‘black salve’ that the FDA warned against? Is this even safe?

A: This is a totally different product.  That ‘black salve’ is a bloodroot salve that is used for cancer, and caution is warranted.  This is bentonite clay and charcoal and is perfectly safe!

Q: I’m allergic to lavender, but I need this! What do I do?

A: We recommend trying our Pit Detox Mask instead!  It will work similarly but does not contain lavender.

Q: My product arrived melted. What should I do?

A: The quality of this product is not affected. Simply place the item in the fridge to re-harden it!

My daughter woke up screaming this morning. She didn’t know why but something was on her eye and it hurt. I walked in to see her eye swelling up from a bee sting. I found the bee and killed it then ran to find my black drawing salve. I’d usually use the bug bite thing, but this was so close to her eye that I couldn’t.
I put a little bit of black drawing salve on the spot and made her lay for 15 minutes. Then I wiped it away with a wash cloth and it was GONE! I couldn’t even see where it stung her anymore and it was hardly swollen at all!
I just bought this a few weeks ago and this was the first time I used it. 100% recommend having it on hand! I am so impressed and thankful to have had it!

I am so impressed with this stuff! My 5 year old had a rash that gradually got worse over 5 days so I brought him in to the ER. They said it was viral and to keep trying OTC products, which we did but he was still so itchy and it wasn’t getting better. I remembered I had this stuff, messages Earthley on the chat and they said I could try it. I put it all over his back and chest where he had the rash, put a black shirt over (to not stain his clothes), and by the end of the day the rash was almost completely gone! This stuff is a miracle, smells good, is all natural, and it finally made my son stop itching!! I’m highly impressed! Thank you!!

Have to tell you this. Had poison ivy on ankle and this salve cleared it up quicker than apple cider vinegar.

  4. Sylvia Harris (verified owner)

I was a bit disappointed with this salve. I used it for bug bites yesterday and it did not seem too work. I am not really sure what happened, but this actually gave me a slight rash on my leg. The itchiness got worse too. I give it three stars because part of me believes this is the detoxing process. Also it is very hard to get off (which is okay – I understand about that). I left it on for maybe an hour and covered with band-aids, so I probably left it on too long. Maybe the adhesive of the band-aids also did something. The rash occurred along the outside line of the band-aid. I’ll keep trying this, because I love Earthley products and it was probably me not using it correctly. Tonight I will try it on my acne and see what happens. If I get better results I’ll leave another review with a higher rating. And I will make sure not to put it on for too long! Thanks Earthley anyways for the product! I’m sure it’s just me 🙂

Had a tiny piece of a splinter that I could not get out. I used the stick and viola, splinter out. Thank you.

I used this for ringworm and after 5 or 6 applications its drying up and healing! I’m very impressed.

My youngest (almost four) gets reactions to mosquito bites. They swell pretty large and are red and take a few days to calm down. I put this stuff on after i noticed him scratching one at his temple hairline. It never swelled up! He stopped itching instantly and while it stayed red for a few hours that was the end of it! I’ll keep a stick on me anytime it’s mosquito time

Hot mess express! Does not clean off easily. You are better off making a paste with clay and water for bug bite irritations. Will not purchase again.

  9. Megan Lashlee (verified owner)

I love this product and use it all the time. It works so well on both me and my kids plus, it smells nice. I recently got it for a friend a a gift and this was her review: “Your bite/sting stick saved us last night! M got stung by a bee yesterday but he was fine.. until 3am ‍♀️ and then he was very much not fine. And I was frantically searching for something for it and then I saw the bite/sting stick- and yes I was shocked at how black it was (I totally forgot about that as it was 3am haha)

    But it worked immediately!!!”

Although this salve relieved my itchy rash, It’s impossible to get off your skin. They say coconut oil works but I had to scrub to get it off and it’s still there so it looks like I have a bunch of dirt on my neck. Defeats the purpose because it just irritated my rash so bad. It’s a no for me.

I’ve tried this with three of my boys. It works on bites if you apply it right away. One of my boys swelling went down and the bite wasn’t itchy! The other boys had already scratched at theirs and didn’t want the black on them until they couldn’t handle it anymore and tried it. It didn’t work as well. So apply it right away!

This works great and smells good too! My little guy gets a nasty reaction to mosquito bites. I apply this salve and it helps so much. It does stain though….so be careful 😉

  13. Chantal McDougal

This has been amazing for insect bites! Helps stop the itching and shrink the bite within minutes!

  14. Katie Hallmark (verified owner)

I’ve only used this twice, for one mosquito bite, but it was pretty helpful! I was hoping for more of a miraculous, instantaneous effect, but that might have been unrealistic expectations. I used it twice, once each day for 2 days, and it did help reduce the itching and swelling (my body reacts more intensely to mosquitoes since I was pregnant). I hope it continues to help with bites I’ll get!

  15. Rachel (verified owner)

Last summer, I discovered how good this drawing salve is for mosquito bites! It’s also the perfect size to carry in my purse, which is great. I mostly get bit on my legs and ankles, so the black color isn’t a huge problem. I also find it super helpful to put on bites just before bed – the itch is gone before you know it and it makes it SO much easier to sleep! (you may need to be careful about your sheets though). The next morning, I usually don’t even think about the bites.

Really effective with relieving stings and itchyness from bug bites.

  17. Emily Adams (verified owner)

I applied this when I had a painful splinter in my finger and within an hour it easily came out. So thankful to have this around, both for splinters and for going camping so we can use it on pesky bug bites.

  18. Alexsandra

I’ve used this on bites, on my face, and it works. It really helps to stop the itchiness and it really helps with any potential pimple. It isn’t the easiest to use since it is black and easy to get everywhere. So I tape gauge over it overnight. And to get it off, oil is the key. Water and soap doesn’t get it off completely. This is another product I recommend to my family, friends, and clients.

  19. Dori Groff (verified owner)

Great stuff, it works! Helped reduce my poison ivy bumps quickly, and also helps with insect bites, takes the itch away!

  20. Amanda Lester (verified owner)

Wonderful for bug bites and stings. I’ve read it can be used immediately after vaccines to pull out the toxins. We’ve had great luck with it. Can be a bit messy but the stick form really helps!
