We formulated our Black Drawing Salve as a solution for bug bites, stings, rashes, poison ivy, acne, splinters, and more! It’s made with activated charcoal, bentonite clay, and lavender essential oil to soothe irritated skin and “draw out” toxins.

The charcoal and clay serve to ‘trap’ the toxins that are being drawn out of skin, including oil from poison ivy or toxins from stings.  This reduces pain and irritation naturally and helps it repair faster!

FAQs

Q: How do I use this?

A: Apply to the affected area and let it sit for 10 – 15 minutes.  Wipe off.  Reapply as needed if the spot is still irritated.  If you would like to keep it on longer (may be necessary with splinters), cover with a bandage to prevent mess.

Q: What can I use this for?

A: Bug bites, stings, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, acne, splinters.  Some people even use it after being forced to receive a vaccine — right on the injection site.

Q: Why is this so messy? Can’t it be some other color?

A: Unfortunately, the ‘mess’ is what makes it work!  Charcoal makes it black and is a key ingredient to ‘draw out’ the toxins.  We recommend covering with a bandage and washing with soap and water after use. If soap and water do not work, an oil of your choice should do the trick!

Q: Is this the ‘black salve’ that the FDA warned against? Is this even safe?

A: This is a totally different product.  That ‘black salve’ is a bloodroot salve that is used for cancer, and caution is warranted.  This is bentonite clay and charcoal and is perfectly safe!

Q: I’m allergic to lavender, but I need this! What do I do?

A: We recommend trying our Pit Detox Mask instead!  It will work similarly but does not contain lavender.

Q: My product arrived melted. What should I do?

A: The quality of this product is not affected. Simply place the item in the fridge to re-harden it!

I do think the product works (at least as well as other anti-itch products), but it’s not a convenient item for me to use. It comes off very black on your skin. It will mark up any clothes/fabric if it comes into contact, so it must be rubbed into your skin well. When I do rub it in, it looks like a very nasty bruise & then it’s quite tough for me to wipe it off later. So, it’s not something I’d dab on if I’m going somewhere or already in public. If I forget where I’ve put it or to wipe it off, I look dirty/bruised. It’s good for home use if you don’t plan to get out.

      Hi Denise!

Try putting a fair amount on and don’t rub in — then, after 10 or 15 minutes, simply wash off. It helps to “draw out” the junk the bite left behind. If you still need something for itching, All-Purpose Salve is great and isn’t messy. 🙂

Just got this in the mail today, immediately applied to 2 spots of stubborn pregnancy hormone chest acne that just wouldnt tame down after weeks and my son’s many mosquito bites. The inflammation from both are gone after only one treatment. Can’t wait to try the pest aside now to avoid those pesky mosquitoes altogether.
    Very happy with this purchase.

  3. Nicole A

Great for bug bites and splinters. It is a must have in our kid emergency kit!

  4. Lindsey H

I have found this to work well for many things, my kids didn’t feel it helped really well for really ichy mosquito bites, I felt it helped me, but they didn’t.

  5. Brenda Good

I had what I think was a bite on my face. Dabbed some of this on before I went to bed. Got up next morning and it was gone.

  6. Brittany S. (verified owner)

After 3 applications, it got the tiniest splinter out. It really works and I was skeptical.

  7. Tanielle (verified owner)

I had a mystery bite on my hand and this cleared it up quickly and helped to relieve the itching. Definitely a must have for your first aid kit

I have not had an occasion to use this yet, but often I’m allergic to bug bites so I’m looking forward to trying it. My suggestion would be to attach the label better on the package, I had to tape mine as soon as it came as it was starting to fall off. It would also be good to have some of the uses printed on the label. Thanks

This seems to work pretty well. I’ve used it on ant and mosquito bites, especially on my children. The only suggestion I have is that they put what it is used for on the tube itself. I have several of their first aid tubes that have a variety of functions, so it can be confusing. But I used my label maker to print out what each one is for so that I don’t have to try to remember.

My family uses this a lot with the warmer weather setting in. Great for all the bug bits we have gotten.

  11. Kayla Ortiz (verified owner)

I call this bug bite magic. Forget bug repellent and got bit? Random insect bite show up? Put some of this on. Tip : be generous with the amount for it to work. Also it does make your skin temporarily back but aside from people asking you why it’s black, it’s not a big deal.

  12. Emily (verified owner)

Great for soothing bug bites and pulling bee stingers.

  13. Morgan Marshall (verified owner)

Another must have! This was perfect and so effective for my little one when he was stung by a wasp. We gently rubbed it on his bites and immediately saw a huge improvement. I also love that it can be used for splinters, or even on your face for blackheads and such. Such a goodie!

  14. Jessica (verified owner)

We haven’t had much occasion to use this, just on a few scrapes, but it makes me feel good knowing it’s in our medicine kit for when the need arises. It’s easy to apply and goes on smoothly, which is important when dealing with wounds.

  15. Tiffany Paff

This is a must have for the natural medicine cabinet. I cannot count how many times we’ve used this. Everything from bug bites to infected sores.

  16. Brenda Good

I’ve actually used this on acne. Works great.

  17. Caitlin (verified owner)

Got stung by a bee, whipped this out of my purse and applied within a minute. The burning sensation went away and you couldn’t even see the sting by the next day. Amazing! I felt like a wizard too.

  18. Jennifer (verified owner)

My daughter got a splinter that was too deep for me to get out. 2 applications of this and 30 minutes late the splinter was out!

  19. Heidi Hayes (verified owner)

My kids really think it works for poison ivy and bug bites.

  20. Jessica Morris (verified owner)

I always use this on my toddler’s bug bites and they’ve never gotten infected. It seems to help the bites go away sooner.
