Organic Argan Oil

Argania spinosa

You might need Argan oil if . . .

The idea that oil is bad for skin is changing. Modern society and medicine have us all thinking that you can’t use oil on oily skin, it will always make the problem worse. And while this is true in some cases, there are lots of oils that can improve your skin's oil production, elasticity, and moisture. Argan oil is one of those oils!

Argan Oil can help with:

  • Dry skin
  • Dry hair
  • Skin elasticity
  • Wound healing

Benefits of Argan Oil

Fatty Acids: Argan oil is renowned for its moisturizing properties, thanks to its high content of fatty acids, primarily oleic and linoleic acids. These oils help to hydrate the skin, reduce dryness, and boost skin elasticity. Additionally, its antioxidant vitamin E content helps protect the skin from oxidative damage caused by free radicals and UV radiation, potentially preventing premature aging.

Contains Antioxidants: The antioxidants and tocopherols in argan oil also provide anti-inflammatory benefits. This can be particularly beneficial for reducing inflammation in various bodily systems, potentially helping things like joint stiffness. Its anti-inflammatory properties, combined with its antioxidants, make argan oil a beneficial dietary supplement for improving overall health.

Healing Properties: Due to its fatty acid and antioxidants, argan oil can help support the skin in healing. The fats help lock in the right amount of moisture without it being too much. The antioxidants help fight free radicals, allowing the skin to heal and recover.

Common ways to use Argan Oil

Topically: In the US, we usually see argan oil used in cosmetics like skin care, hair care, and skin healing products.

Food: Argan oil has a rich, nutty flavor and is used in many Moroccan dishes including salads, couscous, grilling meats, vegetables, and more.

More about Argan Oil:

There are 3 ways to make argan oil.

Cold Pressed: This is the best way to get argan oil. A machine presses the kernels in a cold room or at room temperature, and the oil leaks out and is collected. This process is best for preserving all the nutrients the oil has.

Hot Pressed: This is very similar to cold pressed, only the kernels are heated up first. The heat makes it so that you can get more oil, but the oil has less nutrients and can go bad faster.

Chemical extraction: This process involves chemistry. Chemicals (known as solvents) are used to get the oils out. These chemicals are not good for our hair or skin, and nutrients are lost in the process as well. This is not a beneficial process if you want all the benefits of argan oil.

Growing and Foraging Information

Argan oil comes from argan trees, which are mainly found in Morocco. You will not be able to forage for the fruit of the argan tree, and they are difficult to grow indoors due to their deep root systems that are best suited for dry environments.

Safety Concerns

There are no known safety concerns.

Breastfeeding and Pregnancy: There are no known contraindications for breastfeeding and pregnancy.

Other Concerns: Argan oil is a very gentle but effective natural oil. There are very few concerns. As with any food, there is a chance that someone could have an allergy to argan. If you have sensitive skin, be cautious and test a very little bit of the oil on a very small part of skin to see if you have an allergy to argan oil.

Select Studies About Argan Oil

The effect of dietary and/or cosmetic argan oil on postmenopausal skin elasticity - PMC (nih.gov)

This study involved 60 postmenopausal women that either consumed or applied argan oil topically. The 60 were divided into two groups of 30, one group consumed argan oil, as well as applied it topically, and the other group consumed olive oil and applied argan oil topically. After 60 days, the skin elasticity was analyzed, and both groups saw improvements in the elasticity of their skin.
