The Green Family Backyard Herbalism Series

The Green Family Backyard Herbalism Series is an easy-to-follow curriculum that takes the stories of the Green Family and walks you through how to use everyday herbs and how to make natural remedies. These books are meant to inspire you and your children to view nature in a new light. Inside, you’ll find a fun story about the Green Family, who grow some of their own food, make their own medicine, and homeschool. These stories give way to real-life projects, so that you can learn in a hands-on way!

To prep for these lessons is very simple! You can do a whole book in one day (it will take 2 – 3 hours) or break it up into multiple days. It can even make a great week-long unit study!

First up is the Backyard Salves book. This book is all about making herbal salves. Follow along with the Green Family as they harvest herbs, infuse them in oil, and prepare the salves. You’ll have complete instructions on how to do this yourself! Learn how to make a basic salve with a single herb...try some of the recipes in the book...or create your own recipes once you feel comfortable with herbs.

Backyard Salves: Book One

Backyard Salves is a physically printed and bound book filled with lesson prep, supply lists, stories, recipes, and other educational material.

Suggested lesson plan:

• Lesson 1: READ the first story section + information through wildcrafting. Identify and harvest herbs from your backyard or a local park. Set herbs to dry.

• Lesson 2: READ about carrier oils + supplies needed for salves. Check on drying herbs.

• Lesson 3: READ how to make an infused oil. Begin your infused oil with a single herb. (Consider fast infusing if you want to complete this in one week.)

• Lesson 4: READ how to make an herbal salve. Strain your oil and make your salve.

• Lesson 5: READ salve recipes and herbal vocabulary. Try one of the recipes OR choose an activity from the “extend the learning” section.
