Common Ways to Use Prickly Pear Oil

Prickly Pear Oil is typically used in cosmetics and skincare products.

How is Prickly Pear Oil made?

The prickly pear fruit grows on a cactus and needs to be ripe before it is harvested. Once harvested, they must be washed and the pulp or fruit separated from the seeds. When drying the seeds, it must be done at 104 degrees Fahrenheit; this helps to ensure that the oil, fatty acids, and vitamin E in the seeds are not altered. After that, they are cold-pressed to remove the seeds' oils. The oil is then filtered.

There is also a method of using solvents to get the oil out. They clean and dry the seeds and then grind them in this method. After the seeds are ground, different solvents are added to the ground. The solvents attach to the oil and allow for the oil to be pressed out.
